Abdullah Al-Mamun Theatre School

Welcome to Theatre School

Theatre School was established in 1990 to impart basic training in theatre arts for young theatre enthusiasts. Students aged between 18 and 35 were offered one year certificate course on acting at the beginning. With a 3 year grant from the Ford Foundation, the numbers of classes were increased from 4 to 6 weekly (3 days a week and 3 hours a day). Three months’ short courses were offered in 14 district towns and some advanced short courses on acting, direction, set design, lighting and make-up were also organized around the country. The grant also helped us to establish a rich library of theatre books. After successful completion of 25 batches of one year course, Theatre School now offers 6 month long basic course to meet the growing demand for short courses. National Professor Kabir Chowdhury was the founder Principal and after his death in 2011, Ramendu Majumdar became the Principal of Theatre School. In 2008, after the demise of Abdullah Al-Mamun, Founder Vice-Principal, the School was renamed as Abdullah Al-Mamun Theatre School to keep his memory alive. The School is yet to find a permanent campus. Classes are now held in a rented floor of Bangladesh Mahila Samity at New Bailey Road (Natok Sarani), Dhaka.
